We have a long history at Shag Lake of items lost in the bay eventually and mysteriously returning to their owner.
Sometimes it happens quickly, as when I threw my rod and reel overboard with a overenthusiastic cast, only to retrieve it when snagging the line a few casts later with a backup rod.
Sometimes it takes a bit longer, as when we lost a cement brick anchor overboard when the line was inadequately secured to the boat by my brother. Years later, we noticed a nylon line floating just beneath the surface and thought we should retrieve it as it presented a potential propeller hazard. Upon pulling it up , we found our long lost cement brick anchor.
Today, while fishing for bluegill in our much shallower bay, Dad noticed something that looked out of place in the water. I reached in and pulled it out.
My favorite Cub hat. It blew off my head on a windy day years before, and sank just out of reach as I desperately lunged over the boat in an attempt to retrieve it. Not sure of the exact date. I thought I documented the loss in a blog post, journal entry, or e-mail update, but cannot find it now. I do know it was before May 31, 2008.
The bay taketh, and the bay giveth back:
Not necessarily in as good a condition as when it goes in.

hmmm... I seem to recall an alternate version of this story. If possible check the camp log for an entry about 7-22-1999 or so ...
It's the groundhog hat. It arises every decade or so to ask, are the Cubs any good yet? Throw it back.
However, if you find a Blackhawks hat....
@anon
I really don't have time to research your obscure literary references.
@Jeff
I was hoping the omen was a much more straightforward "The Cubs Are Back." Just in case, I don't think I should throw it back before the fall trip.
Hermeneutics is a tricky business and there are always multiple interpretations. And so, an alternative reading would suggest that you are meant to wear the hat, muck and all, at Wrigley Field at your next possibile opportunity. It could cause the opposing team to laugh so hard that the home team might actually win a game.
